Bonza now likely to launch Mid-Year (CEO Says) Australian Aviation

The chief executive of start-up airline Bonzer now thinks the carrier will probably start operating in mid-2022.

Tim Jordan said it was still a “possibility” it could start flying late in the second quarter, its progress would depend on how quickly it could pass regulatory requirements with CASA.

Jordan was speaking exclusively on a special episode of the Australian Aviation podcast, which you can hear above, where he elaborated on the secret plans before operating the airline on 25 routes across 16 destinations in Queensland, NSW, and Victoria. Bonza is unique in that most of its services are so-called “point-to-point” leisure routes instead of flying between or within the capital cities.

When host Hannah Dowling was asked what the next steps would be after the initial rollout, Jordan said, “More like that. We still miss some big cities and some major road opportunities and a number of states and territories that were not mentioned at all yesterday.

“We can’t say we’re here for all of Australia but we haven’t kept that promise.”

In that episode, Jordan also revealed that he would be walking away from the airport not to come to the negotiating table with fees.

He said the charges were for “single, largest-cost” airlines, and that airports that wanted to benefit from Bonza’s low-cost leisure customers had to be competitive.

“I don’t think there’s a perception among the public about how much it costs you to enjoy walking through an airport,” Jordan said.

“All I can say is that all the destinations we announced yesterday, they got it. They have found that we are doing something very different in the Australian market. ”

Jordan said the commercial agreements negotiated between Bonza and the airports are crucial for Bonza’s ultra-low-cost basis and therefore whether the carrier would prefer to fly to those airports.

“Really low fares will not happen under the off-the-shelf price of the airport and we cannot work with that level of price for our business model.

“So yes, we intend to go across the country to provide services to all regions in all the states, however, the responsibility of getting the price required to support value-simulated travel rests with the airports.

“If there is a capital city with an airport that is going to say, ‘Well, our price is our price, unfortunately, take it or leave it, I actually think those communities will be quite dissatisfied with those airports.

“Because they’re going to miss out on what a price-driven trip it will be. And it’s really great for tourism and for markets in and out of certain cities. ”

Jordan said that if airports could not be competitive, it would be “wrong” for Bonzer to work there, “knowing we are going to fail”.

“If we can’t get the price model we need, we would rather not do it. We can place it elsewhere. We have no shortage of choices. ”

Jordan noted that Bonza responded to almost all of the 46 airports it arrived at before its massive unveiling last October but did so with different levels of “stimulus”, affecting which route the carrier plans to begin operations.

A significant exclusion from Bonzer’s initial route network is Sydney, where Jordan said slot rules and allocations at Australia’s largest airport are a “connected complication” for Bonzer.

“I think it’s a barrier for new entrants like us, of course. So it’s a consideration, and it’s a consideration that isn’t essentially a factor in the rest of our network, to be fair. ”
